The goal of the Iroquois Museum is to hold and maintain the most comprehensive collection worldwide of modern Iroquois art dating from the 1960's to the present. In addition, we house and preserve strong archaeological and representative historical collections. The collections continue to grow through acquisitions and gifts from the public, including Iroquois artists and collectors. In a modern building designed to evoke the Great Iroquois Longhouses, visitors are introduced to another world view. The Museum is shaped as such to recall the traditional Iroquois elm bark longhouses found in this area 400 years ago. A long and lofty longhouse with ingenious smoke holes in its roof, is interpreted by architect, C. Treat Arnold as a modern skylight over the Main Gallery. Grey shakes on the exterior suggest slabs of elm bark. The Museum's open porches suggest that additions are possible. Iroquois longhouses expanded to be over 300 feet long at times. The open mezzanine recalls the upper level of bunks and storage. At the great cave of the Northeast, Howe Caverns, an elevator takes you 156’below ground. The doors open into a prehistoric underground cavern 6,000,000 years in the making! Trained tour guides help navigate the cave and teach about its magnificent natural features. The tour consist of a 1.25 mile walk and a 0.25 mile boat ride. Please note that the temperature in the cave is 52 degrees so bring a jacket or something warm. Back on the surface, mine for gemstones at Howe Caverns Mining Co. Beginning in the summer 2011visitors were able to enjoy the first phase of Howe High Adventures— featuring ropes courses, climbing walls, zip lines and more! Lunch is available at the Cavern. There is also a box lunch available.
